The Dark Knight's Hospital Explosion Scene Was Filmed in One Take

One of the most memorable scenes in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (2008) is the Joker blowing up Gotham General Hospital while dressed as a nurse. This elaborate practical effects sequence was filmed in a single take — the detonation was a real controlled demolition.

When some of the explosions didn't fire on cue, Heath Ledger improvised — staying in character as the Joker, pressing the detonator repeatedly with comic timing. The 'accidental' hesitation became one of the most iconic character moments in superhero film history. The scene was filmed in an abandoned candy factory in Chicago scheduled for demolition.
