The Human Eye Can Distinguish About 10 Million Different Colors
Approximately how many colors can the human eye distinguish?
The human visual system is extraordinarily powerful. Scientists estimate that the human eye can distinguish approximately 10 million different colors. This is made possible by three types of cone cells in the retina — sensitive to red, green, and blue light respectively.
When these cones are stimulated in different combinations, your brain interprets the signals as different colors. Women, on average, have slightly more cone cells than men, which may explain why some women can see more shades of color. A rare genetic condition called tetrachromacy (having four types of cones) may allow some people to see up to 100 million colors!
