The United States Has Never Had a Female President or Vice President — Until 2021
Who was the first female Vice President of the United States?
In 232 years of American history, from George Washington to Donald Trump, every President and Vice President was male. That historic streak ended on January 20, 2021, when Kamala Harris was sworn in as the 49th Vice President of the United States — the first woman, the first Black American, and the first person of South Asian descent to hold that office.
Harris was born in Oakland, California to a Jamaican-American father and Indian-American mother. She served as San Francisco District Attorney, California Attorney General, and US Senator before becoming Vice President. Her election to the role fulfilled a decades-long milestone for American democracy.
