Political scientist Thomas Friedman proposed the 'Golden Arches Theory of Conflict Prevention' in his 1999 book: no two countries that both had McDonald's had fought a war against each other. His idea was that countries wealthy enough to sustain McDonald's franchises had a middle class that would reject the disruption of war.
The theory was famously disproven in 1999 when NATO bombed Yugoslavia (which had McDonald's), and again in 2008 when Russia invaded Georgia. Nevertheless, it highlights an interesting correlation between economic development, trade integration, and reduced military conflict. McDonald's operates in over 100 countries today, serving approximately 69 million customers daily worldwide.
